Twitterature: September Edition

by Stacey

Thanks to Anne at Modern Mrs. Darcy, I am doing a much better job than usual at keeping track of my books.

Here is the Twitterature version of my reads from the last month.

15776309

Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight. While on vacation I reached out to Facebook friends for book recommendations. I was looking for an easy read but not too easy and the kind of book that your family does not want you to read on vacation because you read instead play. This story of a single mom after the apparent suicide of her only child was a perfect suggestion. Thanks Amy!

The Art Forger by Barbara Shapiro. The Art Forger was another suggestion from my friend Amy and another perfect pick. Part love story, part art history lesson and part mystery. This one was hard to stop reading.

16171291

The Silent Wife by A.S.A. Harrison. I had read that the Silent Wife was this summer’s Gone Girl. I agree but take note; I didn’t like Gone Girl.

The Blue Asylum by Kathy Hepinstall. Blue Asylum was this month’s selection for my new library book club. There were parts of this book that were interesting but overall, I felt this story of a woman wrongly sent to an insane asylum by her husband during the Civil War was rushed and unbelievable.

Ooo – I’ve been on a mystery kick lately!  The Art Forger sounds awesome.  (Also… have you watched the show Suits?  Similar theme; really hot lead actor.)  =)

  2. Stacey says:

This is the second mention I’ve seen for The Silent Wife. I liked Gone Girl, once the story actually got going. Is this one worth picking up?

    • Stacey says:

The Silent Wife was pretty good but not great. There are definitely better books out there 🙂 I was just over at your blog and I would recommend reading another Jojo Moyes before reading The Silent Wife 🙂

  3. I’ve heard a lot about The Silent Wife lately. I’m thankful for your comparison to Gone Girl, because I didn’t like it either! I won’t be reading this one despite the buzz.

    • Stacey says:

I love hearing about other people who didn’t like Gone Girl. I really thought I was the only one. The thing I kept saying last year was that I really didn’t care if the girl was gone- I just couldn’t connect with any of the characters in that book. And I felt the same way about the characters in The Silent Wife…

  4. Meg Evans says:

I think that calling any book “this year’s Gone Girl” is a surefire way to get me NOT to read it.  I did not like Gone Girl!  I enjoyed the Art Forger.

    • Stacey says:

I am so glad to hear from others who didn’t like Gone Girl- I thought I was the only one! And Meg- I just checked out your blog and for some reason, I am having a hard time commenting. Just wanted to say that I too love Ann Patchett but haven’t read the two you mentioned- can’t wait to add them to my list!

  5. Ibukun says:

Second time ‘The silent wife’ made someone’s reading list. I haven’t read ‘Gone girl’ so I’m a little skeptical about this one

  6. Shana Norris says:

My mom bought The Art Forger for my husband (a painter) for Christmas.  As soon as he finished it, I snatched it up.  I liked it, although not as much as he did, for obvious reasons.  I had a hard time embracing the main female character (can’t remember her name at this point.)  The plot flowed along nicely, though, and I was totally into it.

    • Stacey says:

Shana- Glad you liked Art Forger too. I would have love to hear a painter’s perspective on the book. I bet your husband found it so interesting.

  7. MK Jorgenson says:

I’m not a big mystery girl, but your description of The Art Forger made me go “oooo-ooooh,” which I think is code for “I want to read that!”

  8. Donna says:

My book group is reading “Amelia” so I’m glad to hear it was worth the read. A usually reliable friend has recommended The Time in Between. Will be adding The Art Forger to my list for sure!

    • Stacey says:

Amelia was really good. I think you’ll have some good discussions! I’ll have to look in to The Time Between. I haven’t heard about it…
