Books that Make You Say, “What!?”
by Stacey
My friend Nicky is my most trusted ‘book recommender’ (I know it’s not a word but it should be). So last week when she told me I had to read The Other Typist so we could talk about the ending, I downloaded it on my Kindle right away.
I’ve been in a bit of a reading rut and stumbled through the beginning of this book too. Then when I got about three quarters of the way through, I needed to finish it. Immediately. So I read the way I do on vacation. I sat on the couch for a big chunk of time and read. Then I read the way I do when I’m not on vacation. I read while cooking, while waiting for the dog to go out, while reading spelling words out loud to Katherine. And as soon as I finished reading, I called Nicky.
I can’t tell you anything about the book. I think it is best that you go in to it not really knowing the plot. And to be honest, I am not ever sure I recommend it. I am pretty annoyed at the book right now. But I do know that I want to talk to other people about the ending. So go read and come back and tell me what you think really happened.
And in the meantime, what was the last book that made you feel this way? The last book that you just had to finish and the last book that you felt a strong need to talk about once you had finished reading? Do tell because I think it going to be hard to find something to read for a bit after this one…
I am on it, have to spend the am at the DMV, so will download! Promise a Raymonds date to discuss!
Perfect Melinda! Really looking forward to what you think!
It’s been a few years, but I remember finishing The Double Bind by Chris Bohjalian and wishing desperately that one of my friends had read it so we could discuss the ending.
I recently read The Silver Star by Jeannette Walls for book club. I can’t wait to discuss it, because there are so many common elements between it and her first memoir, The Glass Castle, which everyone in my book club has also read.
You’ve made me very curious about The Other Typist!
Oh my goodness Shana! I had forgotten about Double Bind but that is exactly the feeling I had when I finished the other typist. Exactly!
I love that feeling! I can’t really remember what the last book I felt that way about was. Partially because I start a lot of books and don’t sit and read straight through often. Maybe The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult or Gone Girl (which wasn’t really recent, but so good).
Yes! I haven’t read The Storyteller but I love Jodi Picoult. I think that one needs to go on my list!
I really enjoyed this book. It’s a good one.
It was a good one!
I remember seeing that you’d added The Other Typist to your stack, and was interested in seeing what you thought. In general, I had a really hard time enduring the voice, so this is a gorgeous book I bought, have sitting across from me as I type, but did not finish. Maybe I should give it another chance…? I love getting to talk books with you, Stacey!
Oh! I wish you had finished it! I agree that the voice was a bit annoying but the twist at the end is just nuts. If my friend hadn’t told me to read it so we could discuss, I might have given up in the middle but the end was nuts. Let me know if you end up finishing it- I would love to hear what you think!
